Chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection
Chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection is a long-term, persistent infection of the liver caused by the hepatitis B virus. It is a serious health condition that can lead to liver damage, liver cancer, and other complications. Chronic HBV infection is defined as the presence of HBV surface antigen (HBsAg) in the blood for at least six months. HBV is transmitted through contact with infected blood or bodily fluids, such as during unprotected sexual contact, sharing needles or syringes, or from mother to baby during childbirth. Chronic HBV infection can cause inflammation of the liver (hepatitis) and may lead to scarring of the liver (cirrhosis) and liver failure.
Symptoms of chronic HBV infection
Symptoms of chronic HBV infection may include fatigue, abdominal pain, loss of appetite, nausea and vomiting, joint pain, and jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes). However, some people with chronic HBV infection may not experience any symptoms at all.
Treatment for chronic HBV infection
Treatment for chronic HBV infection may include antiviral medications, such as tenofovir or entecavir, which can help suppress the virus and reduce the risk of liver damage. In some cases, people with chronic HBV infection may also require a liver transplant.
Prevention for chronic HBV infection
Prevention measures for chronic HBV infection include getting vaccinated against HBV, practicing safe sex, not sharing needles or other injection equipment, and ensuring proper infection control measures are in place in healthcare settings.
